Industrial Design: Lighting Design (Materials?)

02/01/2008 12:32 AM

Hello everyone! I'm designing a light for a project at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. I have an idea of what I want to do, but I'm not sure what materials I am going to use for the final model. I'm searching for a material that is translucent (clear or whitish as long as it lets light through) and has the consistency of a gummy worm (but tougher). Some kind of plastic or rubber? I'm only making a model, so I wouldn't want to buy in bulk. Does anyone know specifically what kind of material that would be and where to get it? Thanks

Think about gelatin filters - available at photo supply and theatrical supply shops

Lumenyte distributes a side lit optic fiber which I use in my underwater and other hostile environment illumination projects. Various diameter, extruded and dual-jacketed cable elements. Central transmission core comprised of proprietary transmissive gelatinous compound; heat formable with a durometer about midway between a Gummy Bear and a not-too-fresh Milk Dud caramel core (to maintain your confectionery-themed descriptor.) Please post some photos if you can - we love good light as long as it does not contribute to light pollution. Be respectful and shine!
