20 years later....

04/26/2006 12:55 PM

Not sure if anyone here noticed but today is the 20th anniversity of the Chernobyl disaster. ( I was surprised no one posted it yet) I won't bore everyone with retelling that days events since I'm sure we've all heard them 100 times by now but I wanted to share these two links.

I though this was very interesting first hand perspective of what the accident site and surrounding area looks like today… Part 1 & Part 2

Any thoughts?????

Chernobyl and Tehran

Nuclear power plants in the hands of authoritarian regimes are a very bad idea - even if the facilities really are for civilian purposes.

Wormwood...

...and Fennel. Chernobyl has been in the news in Britain, but no-one here has told it like this. Don't think this couldn't happen here - it just hasn't happened yet. Prometheus, and his gift, are amongst us all. Link - Prometheus and General Electric.

Windscale

We have had our own Chernobyl of sorts anyone remember windscale in the sixties. That went critical and there were men in there with poles trying to get the isotopes out of the reactor. That just got capped with concrete. What are we leaving the historians of the future to dig up? The romans left us pottery and coins we'll leave them radiation. ain't life grand.

nuck-you-ler (bushism)

Nuclear energy, Because of Chernoble and Three Mile Island, there hasn't been a new nuclear power plant built in America for over twenty years (Probably closer to 30 years). This is a shame. Is Nuclear Energy the end all and be all of our energy problems? No, however we only have about a thousand years of coal left. And cold fussion isn't around the corner. Yet, there has been great strides in nuclear power production, making the technology safer and cheaper than ever before. I do not want a nuclear power plant within 500 miles of my home (NIMBY syndrome). Believe it or not, France currently leads the world in Nuclear Power Production (if you can believe that France leads in anything other than snide remarks) and General Electric is now applying for and will probably recieve license and permits for a new plant in the U.S. The problem is where will we ever let them build it? On top of Yuka Mountian in Nevada maybe. I did not intend on going so far off topic, yet like the man said, some governments shouldn't be allowed to use this technology. Just maybe, we are one of them.(Three mile Island) Thanks and have a great day guys...
