Gravity Probe B

04/27/2006 11:25 AM

I just ran across a VERY interesting Stanford University website about Gravity Probe B which is a spacecraft launched April 20, 2004 to measure predictions of Einstein's general theory of relativity, which has drawn on theories and technology from as far back as the 1890's. The spacecraft is in a polar orbit 400 miles above the earth and contains some of the most sophisticated metrology equipment I have ever read about. I encourage anyone who is interested in high-tech measurements to visit the site.

Gravity Probe B – a waste of money?

05/28/2006 5:13 AM

GPB is surely a marvel of science and engineering, but is the immense cost of about $700 million justified? General Relativity (GR) has already been tested very thoroughly on Earth, in the solar system and out in the deep universe. Is this not just confirming the obvious?
On the other hand, every test could possibly bring out some interesting effect that GR cannot explain, but some other rival theory could. I found interesting discussions of GPB's merits on the blog Physicsforums. One rival theory that could possibly be falsified by GPB is Self Creation Cosmology (from Wikipedia).
