Technical Difference Between Dual Core and Core 2Duo

Notebooks tend to over heat due to lack of much space for cooling and ventilation.

Core Duo is a single processor split in two, that is to decrease heat generated by the processor.

Core 2 Duo, is 2 processors, each splitted in 2 for same reason.

I think that if you carefully read the Core2 Duo brief that can be obtained by following the link in the first response of this thread, you will find that it (Core2 Duo) is an enhanced dual core processor. And the brief clearly states that the dual core processor is a single processor (or package) with dual channels (or cores) for data processing. It seems to end up being a processor that is much more capable of multi-tasking than a single core processor, and can do so at lower operating frequencies and thereby generate less heat.

Both parts have two processing units in a single package. For performance reasons each core also has some private memory (cache). Most other resources are shared. The difference is the core2 duo is based on newer technology and will have higher performance. For detailed technical differences you will need to look at the core2 feature versus the previous family generation. Note that with core2 Intel is using a finer geometry so there are also core2 quads available (4 processing units on a die).

Having just built myself a new Intel® core2 duo based PC. My guess is that AMD and Intel both manufacture dual core CPUs. Intel calls theirs core2 duo and AMD has another name for theirs. Besides differences in architecture between AMD and Intel they are just different names for the same thing.
