Supporting Steam Pipes

02/05/2008 10:29 AM

please suggest where load hangers are fitted.

i am talking related to support of pipes, normally it is fitted on steam pipes which are horizontal and expansion/contraction takes place. please guide what is used on exhaust pipes of diesel alternator which are horizontal and fitted with expansion bellows (metallic). Are expansion bellow inlet and outlet pipes can be rigidly supported or not. please suggest is there a requirement of expansion bellow on inlet and outlet of exhaust silencer and why, again silencer is rigidly supported.

<please guide what is used on exhaust pipes of diesel alternator which are horizontal>

On Rollers : supported from below or from top(Hanger)

<can be rigidly supported or not>

Better NOT

<expansion bellow on inlet and outlet of exhaust silencer and why>

Needed- to minimize shock from/to Exhaust manifold

<silencer is rigidly supported>

Silencer can be on rollers too.

Steel pipe as used for handling the movement of fluid and gases are hung horizontally in a cradle type hanger.

Exhausts pipe hangers there are many different types. The universal one is a metal perforated strap with a one hole anchor connected together with a piece of high temperature rubber or leather. Rubber or leather allows for expansion and contraction. If rigidly attached to the vehicle vibration would wear through the pipe.

The exhaust silencer(muffler) in you case is large and they don't want it bouncing around. Have seen them supported with flexible straps also.

Bellows are to protect the devices from vibrations that would damage the connections.

Before applying any idea, please provide the drawings of piping isometric with all details related to pipe material, diam., thk., pressure, temp., existing supports, ..... etc. Such a stress analysis must be carried out to discover the portion of excessive stresses and the optimum locations of pipe supports and hangers.

Yes indeed, an isometric with actual dimensions, pipe size, etc.. is very helpful to be able to suggest a efficient and economical solution. However, rollers and straps are not highly recommended, instead sliding assembly would be more appropriate.
