Tower Design

02/05/2008 1:14 PM

Hello everyone,

Is there anyone out there using one or more of the following programs? I am a student whom is considering an intership this summer @ a Tower structural analysis and design firm. I would like to become familar with one or all of these programs. Does any out there have any suggestions about functionality of the software and a link where I could download a copy.

  • Risa Tower
  • Powerline Tower
  • Guymast,Inc Tower
  • Safi
  • Nisa

Any and all information would be appreciated

Thank you

We are using SAFI for drilling rig analysis. We use it quite adequately without the tower subprogram. By adding the tower feature, I'm sure you would have some enhanced features. A major benefit of Safi is the ability to model guy wires as single acting members. Wind loading is included for structural members, but not for plates.

I would encourage you to call either Rachik (the owner) or Louis at Safi, for additional information. They are wonderful people and their number is 1-418-654-9454 . Software like this doen't come with free downloads, but they will be happy to give you an online demonstration. Rachik may also consider a student license

Hi, Linear-expansion-man (I wonder how you deal with non-linear expansion)

All CAE software you listed is not very popular and thus, it is unlikely you'd find an unlimited free 'educational' version anywhere.

Try their web-sites for free 'trial' version downloads. Usually they are limited by the number of days or number of sessions or number of structural members and nodes.

SAFI and NISA are just generic structural programs not specifically developed for tower design, so I see no advantage learning them.

Generally, the most prominent and popular structural soft. in North America is STAAD.Pro and SAP2000. You can find 'educational' versions of both on warezstore.com for mere 20 or 30 bucks. To become more employable not only in your Tower company but elsewhere you'd better get hand on experience in one of these programs.

Cheers, Len

Hi, Linear Expansion Man,

Yes, I bought many various CAD and CAE program from warezstore.com including STAAD.Pro and SAP2000. I think this is one of the rare soft-pirate sites that survived a few years and is still providing good reliable service (sounds like a sales-pitch, isn't it?) I believe they are located in UK but run by Russians.

To buy, you should pay via their secure credit card link (as secure as buying on amazon.com) and they let you download a very small utility called Loader. When you run this executable, it connects to the archives on their server and starts downloading the actual software and a Key-Gen utility ( or some other files for authorization). If interrupted for whatever reason, this download may be resumed from the point where it was terminated but you should finish the entire download within 5 days. They also provide Technical Support via e-mail: this support is just for installation troubleshooting but wouldn't help to use the program you bought.

The software is a complete version without any limitations as good as the one you'd buy from the developer or its official retailer spending a few grands. Indeed, you shall never ever use it for commercial purposes, shall never install it at any workplace or any other institution or business establishment but only play with it at home.

There are many different programs for structural engineering: STAAD.Pro, SAP2000 & ETABS, STRUDL, RISA, S-Frame, LARSA, STRAP, IES, NISA, and some overseas: Robot-Millennium, LIRA, and so on... I could have continued this list forever. You cannot learn many program at once but you can select those that are the most popular (and therefore give you better chances to be employed).

Most of these programs are similar in the concepts and workflow so after learning one you can apply this knowledge to learn another faster. That is why, if I were you, I would limit my purchases by two most prominent programs for North America: STAAD and SAP2000 (assuming you are from the US or Canada)

Cheers,

Len

Man o man you were so correct. They will let you bargin with them too. I found out buying bundles of software of 5 cost less then buying 3.

Than you much!

Hi Linear,

Obviously, both STAAD and SAP2000 have some kind of output printing (for both graphic screen and input/output spreadsheets).

However, it not what an Engineering Checker is after. The main product of your engineering labour will be so-called Design Brief (assumptions, loads, combinations, most important/governing results and design sketches) and that is usually done on Excel or MathCAD. You may insert a few pictures or attach a spreadsheet from you CAE output but it wouldn't be the main content of your work.

Cheers,

Len
