17 Stage Binary Divider

04/28/2006 8:26 PM

Hello from Canada, A number of years ago I designed an inverter, using an IC from National Semis. The part number was MM5369. I wrote to National Semiconductor and I was informed, that this chip is no longer in production. It is a 17 stage binary divider and it produces a 50Hz or 60Hz logic output. It uses a colorburst XTAL (3.579545Mhz) as a reference clock (very cheap). If anyone knows of a similar IC (still in production) from any other manufacturer I would be ever so thankful. I have searched the GlobalSpec site and it only gives me the same info I get from using Google. I don't want to use an obsolete part in a new design. Thanks Jens

50/60 Hz divider

Yeah that was a really great part. I used it in a number of applications. If I had to fill the gap for a new application I would just use one of the Microchip controllers with a watch crystal. It would be a simple matter to program it to put out whatever kind of signal you need. They even make a version in an SOT-23 6 pin surface mount package if your cramped for space.

Hi Guys, Yes, I have also done that before, (in a partyline decoder) but it is easier if I could just get an IC that is all ready to go. And it is usually cheaper. If all attempts of trying to get a substitute fails, then I know that, that IS my only other solution. The MM5369 is still available, but it is discontinued, and it is not too good to use something obsolete in a new design. Thanks a million for your help. Jens

17-stage divider

Hi, There are Toshiba equivalent to the MM5379. They are Toshiba part number TC5036AP or TC5048AP. You may want to try them.

Also, as you may well know, you can build a 17-stage divider by concatenating two chips. For example you can chain a 12-stage (very popular) divider with a 5-stage divider. This arrangement may result in a slower device, but it may be useful for you.

Finally you may want to build one from scratch: take 17 flip-flops and connect them in a counter/divider arrangement. This, of course, will create a very, very slow divider.
