Measuring device

02/07/2008 1:20 PM

Any one know of a non-contact device to measure distance from 0 to 216 inches. With and accuracy of .010? I have looked at several manufactures of laser devices and at any distance over 50 inches the device offered the accuracy was .100 of an inch. Device to be used to set distance between two saw heads in order to cut material as accurately as possible. The saws are cutting PVC, the out gassing has not been kind to the OEM device on the saw.

Have a look at Leuze.

Model ODS 96 has range 60mm - 5000mm, with 0.1mm resolution (it's late, but I reckon that's about 2½" - 196", with 0.004" resolution).

It doesn't start from 0, so you'd have to offset by the first few inches.

Thanks John for the help

After looking at the specs. the 0.1 mm resolution is for the series which is taken from a ODS 96 device with the shortest measurement capability. The accuracy is bad for my use at 2.5 to 5 % of scale.

If Starrett doesn't have a suitable off-the-shelf solution, they can build a custom tool.
