upgrade bios dell gx240

02/07/2008 5:06 PM

Hi guys,

I have a dell optiplex gx240 with bios version ao5. I just double my ram to a gig and need to know if I should upgrade bios. I have tried dell but they stop at v5 and in 2002. Is a higher bios better? Let me know.

(Assuming you're running XP): Control panel > System

will give you a System Properties window. The General tab will show the total RAM. Provided this is a gig (or a bit less - mine shows 992MB for 1GB installed), you're OK - no need to worry about the bios.

dear sir,
a higher bios is not alway's better, if your system isn't having a specific problem it isn't recommended to upgrade, I used to alway's chase the bios rabbit chancing a problem is the upgrade flash went wrong but have stopped unless there is a notice put out by the manufacturer of the motherboard or computer system, I build my systems out of off the shelf stuff so the motherboard comes with book that say's don't upgrade bios if system is working fine,

Read the change log of the new BIOS. Some time they just add support for new CPU. Some time they fix bug and performance problem. Read and see if any of those will apply or help you then decide if you should upgrade.

Then again: if its not broken, don't fix it.
