Energy audit do you mean energy like electric power ,air , gas , By using energy effectivily you save money and by adopting recent developments in electricals like CFL, Metal halide lamps , Power factor improvents also save energy .By adopting VFD For the motors we save 30 % Energy cost, By redusing air leakages also save money . To check all this energy audit is required .

ONE UNIT OF ELECTRICAL POWER SAVED= TWO UNITS GENERATED

The speed of induction motor is proportional to frequency (N= 120 f/ P )as P is constant. Regular power supply available from the supplier is fixed frequency only(60/50 Hz as per prevailing system in any country). So there can be only one fixed speed for an induction motor depending on the number of poles of motor.More than one speed can be obtained only by specially designed pole changing switch and multi pole winding combinations.( like 2 pole 4 pole 8 pole winding).

A variable frequency supply if available can provide smooth speed control of induction motors. The motor need not deliver full power when it runs on no load. Take the case of a compressor motor when the compressor is running idle the motor need not deliver full rated power and need only reduced torque and can save energy on idle run,if the motor is driven with VFD.Pre designed speed for running conditions can be assigned with suitable control circuit to save energy.Similarly if a flow control damper is replaced with VFD it can save fuel consumption. A Case study is given in the following link

VFD is mainly for speed control of cage induction motors .If ur running motors at fixed speed then there are other devices available mostly microprocessor based which sense the load current and regulate the voltage thereby improving the effiency.Mostly motors are under loaded and by redusing the voltage u reduse no load losses and there by an improvement in eff.

Energy consumption world over has reached a level, that if there is no control on avoidable loss of energy consumption the source will dry up and our future generation will have to suffer. Now many developed and developing countries have started to curb the consumption to limit the loss of energy which could be avoided through energy audit. Some countries has made energy audit mandatory for energy consumers and to plans to implement corrective measure.

No matter what "green" or "environmental" reasons you hear, the only real reason to do an energy audit is financial. At the end of the day, companies make decisions on profitability. I find that my customers cut their energy spending by 20%+. This equates to ~10% improvement to their profit margins.

Another aspect is risk. Since energy savings projects typically pay for themselves quickly, they are by default low risk. Add to this the fact that they don't depend on improved sales or a successful product launch, and they become almost risk free.

Then there is corporate image. Energy audits are "green" and "environmental." This creates great PR, improves morale, and makes the company look good.
