Bonding Adhesives

02/11/2008 7:03 AM

What, if any, is the best bonding/adhesive to attach polypropylene to 316 s.s.? This appliction sees acidic conditions with temps ranging only between 50-90 degrees f.

The 2 pieces should have a small amount of press between them but I would like insurance that the Polypropylene "bearing" is not going to fall out of the outer ring (316 S.S.)

Hello mcarlson

The "best adhesive" would be to roughen the 316 S.S. part first, heat the metal, then press the oversized polypropylene part (with a tapered front entering the hole edge) into the hole.

The polypropylene will melt into the Stainless steel part, and the metal will shrink slightly on cooling.

You do not advise what the unit is for, and if you reply with a digital photo in your reply Post, it would greatly assist.

Looking forward to your reply, with thank you.

Kind Regards....

That's what we did and it worked great. Someday, however, we will have parts that are actually .005-.010" clearance.

My tag says "just when I had all the answers ...", but frankly I have few of the answers.

In my work, I deal with a lot of very dissimilar materials, including polypropylene, needing various ways to bind them together in some very aggressive conditions. While some mechanical linking is best (as suggested before), there are some amazing adhesive solutions as well. For me, I always go to the 'experts' in the field, and those are the adhesive companies themselves. You say what you are doing, and they will provide the materials with test data to support it. It won't immediately answer all the questions, but it will put you in the ballpark, and with some empirical research ... try and test ... you can find the best (although sometimes not perfect) solution.

You might start with Hysol at www.hysol.com, or Loctite at www.loctite.com . There may be anaerobic solutions, but likely it will be a 2-part material. The real key with polypropylene is to prepare the surface so that the adhesive systems can bond to it. There are several, but the chemical 'primers' can work extremely well. Finally, don't stop at only the companies I have mentioned, but do more exploring. There are lots of answers.

Completely isolated from the problem under discussion, may I ask if you are native to China? If so, I am very impressed with your command of the English language!!

Hi,

Not a native of China, but a foreigner who is a permanent resident here. I am from the States and have been in China for just over 8 years. I've been in manufacturing, mostly loudspeakers and other audio products, for about 38 years (am I really that old??? it seems unbelievable when I do the math ).

China has been one of the best and most eye-opening experiences of my life ... if there were time, I could write books about it.

Now, aside from blowing my own horn, I can say that I am surrounded by many whose language skills are varied, but still, to me, quite amazing. Surely, there are difficulties now and then with verb tense, sentence structure, and jargon, but, when I consider my great difficulty in learning to communicate in Chinese, I am always amazed at how diligently and effectively so many seek to improve their language skills. Humbling, and sometimes embarrassing, to say the least.

Take care.

PP can be etched and bonded to fiberglass if this is an option for you.
