Basics of Finite Element methods

02/13/2008 1:43 PM

Hi gentle men..i started reading FEM.i got lot of doubts...i was strucked because of these doubts..really unable to move next pages...we divide the structure into small pieces and we will calcluate results for elements and then we will join all the elements at nodes..here how we are relating the linear equations, quadratic eqs.etc to elements (basically weak in maths fundas) for calculating results. How they will join all the elements together with mathematical functions ...what is the shape funcion? why it has imporatnce...i wil be the luckiest person ,if some one gives basic idea about this ,how we can co-relate this maths to fem element to find results..

FEM uses matrix math to calculate the deflection of each element and adjust the ajacent elements accordingly. There will be significant errors. It then re-runs the math until the series converges, reducing the errors.

It is not difficult, assuming you've had the math courses to understand the matrix algebra, but needs a pretty good computer to do all the calculating in less than a human lifetime.

I would suggest going to the following website. http://www.algor.com/default.aspx I have used this software and it's pretty straight forward. I will add that you cant use this software on just any computer. You better have a high end pc or your analysis will take forever depending on what your doing.
