Common Hot Melt Prepreg Standards

02/14/2008 3:00 PM

My company is starting a new line of hot melt prepreg, and to that end I was wondering what are some common standards that are used for quality control purposes. We will be using a very high viscosity resin (~300-400 poise), 12k tow carbon fiber, and will be toll manufacturing the product after we've established the processing parameters.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Since process optimization for most prepreg machines is more of an art than a science, many companies keep that info to themselves. But as for physical testing ASTMs D3039 (tensile), D790 (flexure) and D5528 (Mode I failure) are popular. And for resin characteristics ASTMs D3531 (Resin Flow), D3532 (Gel Time), D3529 (Solids/Matrix content) and D3530 (volatiles content) are often used.

I hope that helps.

Here's a couple of applicable military standards: MIL-PRF-46187(for high temp un-directional tape) and MIL-PRF-46190(woven fabric).
