DIN 1629-ST52 Versus DIN 17121 ST52.3 N

02/15/2008 10:12 AM

Hi Everyone

We are in the middle of a big project and I need the difference between DIN 1629-ST52 AND DIN 17121 ST 52.3N.

I don't have the standards, but I do know that DIN 2448/1629 ST 52.3N is Normalised & Charpy impact tested for special applications. We made some once upon a time, and I had to prepare the charpy specimens.

I expect that what constitutes requirements for "good delivery" may have been updated in the 17121 standard

my opinion. At least now you have some data.

Hi Israel,

You don't specify the type of project in which you are involved, but let me point a couple of things:

  • As Milo said, mechanical properties of both steels are more or less the same and the steel according to DIN 17121 requires impact test (>27 J @ -20ºC). But there are some differences:
  • DIN 1629 tubes were intended for pressure service up to 160 bar and 300ºC.
  • DIN 17121 tubes were intended for structural purposes, not pressure service.
  • Both standards were last time modified in 1984 (20 years ago) and nowadays are superseded by DIN EN standards.
  • For structural purposes, you should use S355 steel according to EN 10210 and if needed specify the optional requirement of impact test.
  • For pressure service, you should use P355N steel according to EN 10216-3

I think you can choose now according to the nature of your project.

Good luck

I saw a similar post that gave your email.

Please describe the work that you are planning on doing so that we can provide appropriate materials.
