copper & fiber cable conduit capacity calculator

02/18/2008 2:28 PM

I was wondering if there are websites that allow you to calculate the number of cables for varying conduit size.

I've found https://edeskv2.belden.com/conduitcalculator/ and

http://www.adc.com/productsandservices/productsolutions/truenet/conduitcalcentry.jsp

but they're vendor specific. Maybe a vendor neutral calculator can't be built, but it would be nice to have one on globalspec.com

Hello

The Cable/Conduit Tables are normally specific for the vendor, and also for the area in which the installation is to be done.

I know of no set of Tables/Formulae which cover all possibilities, and cannot see how such a Table would easily be made, because of the large number of cable makers, plus the large number of installation jurisdictions, and also the varied requirements of a multitude of Insurance Companies as well.

Even one error in such a set of tables, could leave Globalspec or the Table Compilers liable, in case of future trouble.

Kind Regards....

The NEC will give you conductor fill and conduit size for a number of conductors AL or CU but with fiber or other types of data cables I have seen specs on radius allowed, lbs of stress allowed when pulling ect.

I use "Handyman In-Your-Pocket" by Richard Young and Thomas Glover, Sequoia Press (Similar to an earlier "Pocket Reference" from, I believe, the same publishers). They provide tables of "Maximum Number of Conductors and Fixture Wires" for a variety of conduit types, although they do not provide a source reference for the information. From notes to the tables, there is apparently attention given to allowable temperature rise as well as actual conductor size. Experience tells me that I generally need to significantly over size the conduit based on these tables, both to ease the installation, and to account for the fact that, given space, someone is always going to try to cram more into the conduit.

Its simple to produce a calculator for capacity of the tray or conduit. We are not talking electrical loads only weight and diameter.

Try this: http://www.panduit.com/WebApps/WireFillCalculator/index.htm

I have one in excel but not with me today.
