Coal Gasoline and Pollution

02/18/2008 8:34 PM

As I previously worked (many years ago) in coal and coal utilization research, I am well acquainted with most of the reasons why the oil companies and environmental types wish to discard use of coal as a major source for energy (in a green economy). However, I also recognize the profit motives that can drive their rhetoric.

As SASOL, Ltd is/was a major producer of coal-based synthetic gasoline and lubricants, I would be interested in hearing from anyone in the forum that has actual hands-on experience knowledge about cost effectiveness and pollution control issues with the Lurgi Gasifier and Fischer-Tropsch process. Has anyone worked with the SASOL process? I think we get a lot of opinions but not much experiential knowledge on this subject on CR4.

I suspect the coal was used in a gasifier in this case. Back in the 70's I read a text about the lorries used i n England during WWII. Many used a gasoline start, followed by use of gasified coal fumes to operate the engine. Not much power, but they ran though throughout the war that way.

I have heard of the process, but not much detail. Think it might be a good possibility. Raving mad environmentalists will hate it though, so will OPEC, Big Oil and the Arabs. Hope to hear something new here.
