I need v belt help.

02/18/2008 7:24 PM

I need the belts for a Harbor Freight Central Machinery 13 " drill press.Model 38142.They are marked "HAIMEN V-BELT" and then "M24" & "HAIMEN V BELT M26 I am told. The M24 & M26 numbers correspond with the numbers in the Manual.Perhaps 2 "M25" belts would do.The company is on the opposite coast in the USA.They are out of stock and expect a 2-6 week wait before receiving any.Does anyone know of any replacement belts that I could passably find somewhere in the USA?

I am also trying to find someone with some belts to send me complete measurements.

The usual cross referencing at the Auto parts store has not helped so far.

Thanks.peewee

Hello peewee

Presumably these are either A or B vee type belts.

If so, wind a string around the pulleys, make a note of the length, and head off to your nearest auto-parts or engineering supplies store.

Almost all should be able to supply you with the correct length of either A or B section vee belt.

It is advisable to always carry belt spares, then you have replacements immediately available, plus you know exactly which belt/s are needed, and from where you obtain the replacement new spares.

Kind Regards....

Try McMaster-Carr. Just type "v-belt" in their search box, and a belt selection guide should appear.

I always keep on hand a large universal length V belt. It's good to keep on hand in emergencies. It's comprised of multiple pieces of thin belting usually 3 pieces making up the configuration of the belt to form the V. It can be made to any length by adding or removing pieces to get you by temporarily. Some are held together with Metal pins while others are woven without pins. Can be a lifesaver when a snowblower breaks a belt during a big snow storm. I put one on an old joiner/planer and it's been on there for over 5 years. Never felt the need to replace it.

Accu-link is one type of adjustable V belt.

Belt length = (D x 1.5708) + 2 x center to center distance

D = small pully diameter+ large pully diameter

I followed the sites posting instructions and kept it simple. This apparently is not good in all cases.

I would like to thank all who attempted to help me.I did not mean to be rude but I felt that I was unable to answer competently without coming off of medication that I was on and needed to be on for a while as I was having trouble.I have come off long enough now to answer all of you.I do this when ever I have to make decisions or wish to operate any machinery including my electric wheel chair.

I earned my living as a mechanic for 40+ years and was familiar with and used all of the methods and ways you folks sent me many times in my life before becoming handicapped and terminally ill.I thank you all.Being I was house bound, have to depend on others with little to no mechanical ability including the "belt experts" at the auto parts store who "need the exact vehicle info to help anyone with any belt of any kind no matter what it goes on". "We do things the modern way"."We do not do things the old way". I was at a complete loss after being told this after asking them to pull up 3V belts on their computer just as I had on mine.I believe the belt to be about a 3V,but not being able to measure the exact angle to my satisfaction on a "Chinese made pulley" and having no way at the time to send the pulley 80 miles round trip to a industrial drive outlet I could trust,I was hoping someone could answer the question as I asked it.Apparently no one could,BUT each TRIED to help in the HOPE of helping.Thank you each and everyone. You are all good folk.

The problem is now solved by the company sending me one of the two belts that I need to run the machine. The other is still waiting to be made in China to the best that I can understand.

The measurements are all metric on this thing but the thread counts are oddball as is nearly all. There is no buying a metric bolt or set screw to fit it so far. This is why I do not trust the angles on the belt.Much farm equipment was built with odd belts and chain in the past.Anything but the Manufactures was sure to quickly destroy all of the unmatched parts.I have had enough of fighting this this in my past.

Thanks again to all for the attempts and most of all for simply caring about another person needing help. You are good people.peewee
