Apophis Less Likely to Hit Earth by 2036

How about some good news for Monday morning. The likelihood of Apophis, a 320 meter (diameter) asteroid, hitting the Earth by 2036 has been reduced from 1 in 5,500 to 1 in 24,000 after new measurements taken by the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. Apophis will come close to our planet in 2029, within 5.93 Earth radii; and unless something irregular happens, will harmlessly float by. While a 320 meter asteroid is not an "Earth killer", impact would still cause considerable damage.

Earth Killer

So when will we have to suffer through the next spate of killer asteroid movies? And all the news reports of "It could happen tomorrow" that cluttered the airwaves when they are in vogue.
Personally I think that the next wave of disaster movies will have to be tidal waves. We have done volcanoes, tornadoes, earthquakes, ice ages and of course asteroids.

If something that size was to land in the ocean you'd get all the tidal wave you could want ;-)

I'm not sure if a splash is worse than a smash. We were talking yesterday about the Canary Islands exploding and getting a huge tidal wave hitting New York city.

I was in the Canary Islands last year. Could'nt find ONE canary on the whole island..............off to the Virgin Islands this year ;-)
