Remember Geometry 101?

05/22/2006 2:25 PM

A solid object with six sides has been assembled by gluing together several identical cubes. Can you draw the missing view of this object? There are other brainteasers at this site, appropriately named Brainteasers, including riddles, matchsticks, paradoxes, and illusions. The motto of the site: "Is your brain stuck on some problems? Be Happy! It is good proof that you have a brain!"

6 equal sides would be a square 6 non-equal sides would be a rectangle next.....

It looks like they are saying that all the blocks are views of the same box. They really should have them labeled "top view", "right side view" etc.
The question is if we know that all the pieces that comprise the box are identical. (by that I assume same shape and color pattern) what would the missing view look like. There are some slightly darker lines in the drawing, I take those to be where there are separate pieces.
Interesting brain teaser; just badly presented and illustrated.

I disagree. The puzzle, as presented, is soluable. It's just not as EASY as it would be if the views were labelled! Then I could just draw it up in my CAD system, et voila'!

Reminds me too much of a Rubix cube puzzle, which I always hated! (grin)

I stand by the whole "smash and reassemble" method of Rubix's Cube solving.

I'd get a side or two then rearrange the remaining stickers.

I liked to peel off the color stickers (after they became cheaper and used stickers instead of colored plastic!)and re-apply them to the correct faces! Made everyone think I was a genius! (Which I am of course, but in a different way.)

Or better yet, peel off the stickers and hand the all white cube to someone and ask them to solve it.

Talk about messing with someone's mind!

Neither of these is as cathartic as smashing it with a hammer after spending 20 min wrestling with one.

The 4 center blocks on the missing view would be unknown.
