Nanotechnology and the Future

02/24/2008 9:20 PM

I'm writing an article on nano-technology and the future, and I was wondering if you could send me the most audacious futuristic nano-applications that you can conceive of! I already used computers the size of pennies, nano-bots scourging cancer from people, and germ resistant clothing. What's cooking in your nano-kitchen tonight?

Neil Stephenson's book "The Diamond Age: or A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer" is a great book that talks about exactly this. I have seen it referenced in articles about nanotechnology before (I think a Wired magazine article referenced it).

The wikipedia page on the book, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Diamond_Age has a decent summary. If you have time to read it before finishing the article, I highly recommend it.

The most audacious application of nano - as a well funded hoax nano keeps a lot of American engineers and scientists on the payroll while we figure out what to do with them. Pretty cynical, huh?

Type in your serch eng ''nanosolar''. that the newest think I come across recently.

It is just a dream of free energy.

How about nanobot eye repair, reattaching torn retinas? Fixing nerve damage creating new pathways to repair separated nerves. Most spinal injuries nerve endings are separated by a few millimeters, nanobots could bridge the gap. Here is one, nanobot sutures, cut healing time from weeks to hours. Nanobot delousing, no chemicals needed. Nano teeth whitening. Nano Lipo: fat and cellulite removal. Osteosolidosis: the thickening of the bones.

Self-cleaning cell phones, nano crowd control (non-leathal weapons). Nano chemical emulsion. Nano vessel cleaners.

I am addressing lifeisze physical systems such as a building, an aircraft, etc. not systems that are themselves on a nanoscale.

Nano mechanics is a rather interesting topic in Nanotechnology, however we do not yet know how to asssemble nano components to make life-size physical systems. This, I believe, is one of the big challenge in Nanotechnology today.

How about Japan's Mega city based on carbon nanotubes?

"...send me the most audacious futuristic nano-applications that you can conceive of..."

I know...It's why I put it there...
