Electrical Coating needed for JUMP ROPES!

02/25/2008 2:40 PM

I am a jump rope manufacturer. I have a prototype rope that is made up of cut up electrical wire tubing. I need this tubing to make 100,000's more jump ropes. Can someone help me find a manufacturer of this tubing? Ideally I would like to order it cut up in pieces, I have samples and will provide! Please help!

You may be able to get it for cheap or even free if you talk to scrap metal shops. They strip insulation from electrical wire, recycle the metal, and probably toss the insulation. This may be one source for you anyhow, worth a shot looking into. I guess this would only work if you were looking to rework it into something else.

After rereading your request, I take it that you want to run a rope or some such through some electrical cable insulation. I would do a google search for companies that do teflon or plastic extrusion.

You don't provide enough information to determine what type of wire you have. Most electrical wire insulation is PVC. There are others like synthetic rubber and polyurethane. All of these can be acquired from a plastics manufacture in tubing to your specs or their stock sizes in all assortment of colors. They will be able to help you in choosing a plastic that has the flexibility you need with the abrasion resistance needed. You can all so find some of this tubing at you local air hose distributor or an industrial supply house.

Molly,

Look at the tubing. It should have numbers and letters either printed on it or embossed in it. Tell us what they say.

I am going to gather the tubing and see what more information I can provide. It is difficult, the tubing is cut up in pieces so is hard to read any real information. Thank you guys for responding so fast - I am a professional jump roper - this stuff is not my fortay.. so your feedback is awesome and appreciated.

Its like a cats tail but instead of stepping on it you try to jump over it.

I have been trying to imagine Del skipping rope. It would take alot of talent and coordination considering that he has TWO sets of legs to jump with.

I am just now reading all of these off topic threads... HILARIOUS...! I think I should get you all in a rope skipping workshop, we can jump with cat tails... and Del, I can work with you on the 4 legs thing - no problem.

Could your 'cut-up' electrical wire tubing be Hellerman sleeving. These are usually supplied in small, (1 inch) cut lengths of polychloroprene rubber compound but I guess they must start with longer lengths at the manufacturer, (Hellerman-Tyton).

A good thing to know is how much a 10' section weighs and the diameter. In the mean time a good resource is www.usplastic.com.

By the way, great job with what you're doing!

Why don't you go to a company that extrudes plastic? They can make any size tubing you need, out of any material you need. They should be able to cut it to lenght also.

I've made plenty of extrusion dies for companys so let me know if you need some help finding a source.

Hey there, I would LOVE some sources from you. The closer to Colorado the better, for better shipping rates. I appreciate your feedback, help and suggestions! I will have to send you all a rope when it is all said and done!

Wire insulation often contain fairly high concentrations of LEAD. This could present a health hazard to your users and a costly re-call.

the guy who suggested going direct to a tubing producer has a geat idea as this can be made for you inexpensively.
