how to select electrical cables for industrial use

02/27/2008 11:09 AM

what will be the criteria that has to be taken into consideration for selection of electrical cables for industrial use with respect to following point

core , voltage, current, distance of termination, lugs, glands-single or double compression, earthing wire / strip, etc

The most vital criteria is to ensure that the cables that are installed are fit for purpose. Consult your electrical engineer or technician for more details.

Besides what you have mentioned there are other parameters also, viz. armoured/unarmoured, PVC Insulated/XLPE insulated, Aluminum or Copper conductor etc.

You'd better consult your electrical engineer for understanding these aspects.

Everything depends on the current to be carried and the drop in cable to to its length. For example if we have an an auxiliary transformer of 33/0.415 kV, 200 kVA in the substaion a power cable of 31/2 C x 300 sq.mm is required depending on the current to be carried and the distnace of around 30mtr. from the yard to the ACDB in the control room.

This depended on the LV side current and the neutral will be half the size ie. 150 sq.mm only.

The cable data sheets provided by the cale manufacturer will be used to cross refer with the available nerest size.

Also the short circuit current needs to be considered. The cable sz is influnzed in the routing also. ie. whether the cable is buried or inside the cable trench. Also the type of formation that is trapezoidal formation or falt formation needs to be considered.

Most of the things will be understood due to practical application andinvolvement in the design engineering.

Lugs again dependis on the size of the core and the current to be carried. The terminal block size needs to be considered for the size of the connector. he type whether pin type, fork type, ring type is again depends on the imporatnce of the circuit where the cable to be used and the corresponding terminal block to be provided.

Gland depends on the cross of the cable and the type of compression depends on the type of cable whether armoured or unaramoured cable being used.

Insulation, aramour, additional lead sheath depends on the design requirement. Armour will be used for earthing.
