Solar Power Generator-Residential

02/28/2008 6:48 AM

I want to build a solar power generator to provide some or all of the power requirements for my home. Where is the best place to start my research? I'm sure I have a lot of ground to cover.

Try the magazine and web site for "Home Power", this magazine deals exclusively in what you are looking for.

Try to determine the average number of sunny days in the area your home occupies.

Determine how much power you need vs how much you can collect.

These should help you factor all you will learn.

Hi Southern,

There are two main directions for harvesting solar power:

- solar thermal - convert solar energy into heat and transfer it for producing hot water;

- solar electric (photovoltaic) - convert sunlight directly into electricity.

As photovoltaics are very expensive, I would suggest to wait another couple of years until something affordable and with a more rapid turnaround to come up.

Solar thermal is much cheaper and mature technology.

or google "solar thermal residential".

The best solar collectors are the so-called evacuated tubes that work well even in winter time.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

Regards.
