Current Density for TPN Busbar

02/28/2008 12:41 PM

How to Calculate the current density for a TPN Busbar?

Busbar Rating = 200 A

25.7 mm x 2mm tinned copper busbar per phase.

Thanks.

Current Density is current carried by the bus bar per sq.mm or sq.inch.

In this case your trying pass 200 Amps on bus bar size of 25.6 x 2 mm.therefore current density would be 200/25.6/2 amps per sq.mm.

equal to 3.90 Amps per sq.mm.

This is very high.

Generally ,in India , we restrict to 1.33 amps per sq.mm for copper and 0.8 amps per sq.mm. for Aluminium.

This again depends on other conditions like temperature rise, ambient temperature, enclosure dimensions, busbar arrangement etc.

What is the application.

Is it for Switch Board or Busduct.

Ambient Temperature ?

Expected short circuit current?
