Old hand screw machines

02/28/2008 4:33 PM

I was wondering if anyone knows of a company that sells micro switches for a Brown and Sharpe hand screw machine (spindle machine). There is no part number on the micro switch itself. The serial number is: 540-00-15. This switch controls the depth of a pre-drilled hole before it is tapped.

Hello schm8gma

Since the 1940's almost every microswitch has been available from different makers, because of standard sizes.

If you remove the switch, and give it to a local electrician, or electrical supply warehouse, either of them should normally be able to obtain a replacement quickly.

Failing that, if you remove the switch, take a couple of digital photos, upload those pictures into a Post in this Topic Thread, plus give the actual switch dimensions, then it may be possible to advise re a replacement switch.

You do not give your location in your Profile, so if you go to your "My Profile", and did that, a local supplier may be advised for you.

Kind Regards....

Are you asking about the micro switch itself or the complete actuator assembly which houses the micro switch proper?? There is a huge difference. Try McMaster Carr.

Many years ago I owned a machine shop and had a Jones & Lamson ATL (Automatic Turret Lathe) that had an invoice date 2 days after the day I was born.

It had a ton of Allen Bradley limit switches. I don't recall the model number any more but it was a very common Allen Bradley switch that is also used in Automotive as well as a lot of other automation applications. I learned that if a switch failed once replace it immediatly because if it fails once it will fail again.

I learned this the hard way when a switch that drops the turret out of rapid advance and puts it in feed speed. When it failed the first time I was able to catch it and disengage the cycle with the joy stick. Later on in the day it did it again, this time it crammed a 3/4" drill bit into the end of a piece of 2" bar stock in rapid. It was ugly.

Just take the switch into a commercial electrical supply house and you will either find it or a direct replacement.

If you are having switches fail keep an eye on the relays. My J&L had relays going out all of the time - the contacts were very pitted. That is how I learned ladder logic. The machine had about 50 pages of 11x17 ladder logic.

Lots of luck,

Travis
