In my case, money, hair, a full set of teeth, a working bladder, good eyesight, good hearing, and a triple digit IQ.

Forget about the triple digits, how is the prostate?

Just got the green light laser 5 weeks ago. If you're old enough (>50), take it from me - don't put it off just because it's benign. The bigger it gets, the worse the recovery.

Yes, I agree. Good point for you, Truman!

Ragavan,

Communication is very important. This means speaking and listening in addition to being able to write in a logical, easy to understand manner.

If you must write in English, take the time to learn its finer points.

Avoid abbreviations like the plague.

If you must use acronyms, include their meanings beside the first instance of use.

Finally, know that not everyone knows what you know and vice-versa.

That's terrible Steve, blaming the poor engineering student. The fact that educational institutions have not modified their curriculum, should not reflect on the graduating engineers.

Your opening, in fact your only sentence required only 6 words. A willingness to do hard work.

It seems many engineers are afraid to get their hands dirty, much less their shirt. A current case in point.

I realize it would require an extremely keen intellect to surmise that mechanical equipment thats over 40 years old may not be in the best of condition. Or that a 40-year-old job site may not match 40-year-old prints.

No one should expect a consulting engineer to take time away from the all expense paid vacation they got to survey a site to actually look at anything.

It should not surprise educators that engineering students that were too lazy to exceed in their academic requirements, would become Motivationally challenged engineers.

Therefore a class in clairvoyance should be part of any engineering curriculum. This certainly would be a benefit. It would then become possible, with practice to make prints that match more than the address of the job site, from the convenience of their desk.

So don't be surprised when you ask a new engineer the question. (Paraphrasing a noted authority.) Did you go to college stupid? if you get a reply, yeah and I came out that way to!

PS. I realize this post is a month late. But it takes a long time to forward engineer, what the consulting engineer was paid to reverse engineer.

do not despise economics do not forget that technique is in todays industry not the main goal but a TOOL to earn money

I am not sure that "spear heads" should not have, for success, a little bit of insanity because if not they do not dare go over the traditional borders. sanity is always very conservative!

Engineers should think about ERGONOMIC aspects of their designs more. In fact in my opinion engineers should be FORCED to work with the things they design; that would be THE best way to make sure their (later) designs are user friendly.

Where I work there is a valve (BIG one, rarely used) installed so high up that you have to stand on some piping to reach it (unless you are an NBA player). To get to that valve you have to almost crawl under a big tailgas pipe (unless you are a dwarf). Not very ergonomic.....
