Three Mile Island seeks to renew license

04/30/2005 12:55 PM

We've been talking a lot lately about alternative energy sources and how to come up with an effective energy policy. Nuclear power is being spoken of as a centerpiece of the new energy plan. Any discussion of nuclear power in the US eventually comes back to Three Mile Island, site of America's worst nuclear incident, back in 1979. Along these lines, it seems prudent to note that AmerGen Energy Co., the company that runs Three Mile Island has applied for a 20-year extension to its operating license. It also seems fair to point out TMI has been running since 1979 without any major problems, although the Three Mile Island Alert group contends that the company has failed to clean up radioactive waste.

I'm Surprised

I didn't realize that nobody died in the accident. Obviously it's hard to measure the long term consequences of the melt down. I wonder how bad it was as compared to Chernobyl.

There's really no comparison. Estimates for Chernobyl related deaths (immediate and over time)range from 60,000 to 400,000. And in terms of land affected, there is a 30 mile do not enter ring around Chernobyl, whereas Three Mile Island is still in operation.

Viva Las Vegas

It might be easier to feel better about nuclear waste if Yucca Mountain wasn't just 100 miles away from America's fastest growing city, Las Vegas.
