Google Continues to Improve Search

05/02/2005 10:11 AM

Google is improving their News search technology by weighting the source of the news in addition to the keyword relevancy and story release date. It will be interesting to see how they weight the news source. I would imagine they would use link structure to prioritize the news sources. I don't think they would just arbitrarily weight the sources as they see fit since there are a ton of them and it would raise issues of bias. Still, I don't think they could go solely by linking either, since we've already seen through general searches that websites find ways of artificially boosting their ranking. I guess only Google knows.

If they keep with their common method of weighing results it will have to do with the number of links to that news articles and the weight of the page it is linked to.

Back to the Future

Interesting story. This ranking method would seem to favor bigger, richer "traditional" media organizations over Internet newbies. Plus, how do you define "accuracy" in reporting? ABC News is trusted by many, but it's story about exploding gas tanks from a few years back was inaccurate. Would Google have "punished" ABC News by dropping its ranking with regard to stories about the automotive industry?

Blogs?

I'll be interested to see how it handles blogs. They are often the quickest to the punch with news, yet tend to be highly partisan and often contain outright lies.

I believe that it has more to do with how many people listen to the source rather than the accuracy. By deciding what is fact and what is fiction Google would be violating their "Do no Evil" motto. Accuracy is not something I think they should involve themselves in because that is open Pandora's Box.
