In the US, We would call them taconite, and theres a whole bunch sitting under 600 feet of water or so in a wreck named the edmund fitzgerald.

Frankly, I am curious why they wouldn't prefer to use a self fluxing sinter instead.

but they must have access to plenty of low grade ore.

Dear SSSS,

Pelletization is the process of agglomeration of iron ore fines along with additives like lime and then roasting to impart strength so that it can be used in direct reduced iron plant particularly gas based sponge iron plants. Iron ore dust and fines having high purity are ground to a certain level of size and then fed to disc pelletizers where water is sprikled in the dust in disc pelletizers. The water droplets mixed with iron fine makes the nucleus around which more fined are sticking and then the pellets so formed are dried and roasted to a certain extent. the size of pellets is kept around 10-12 mm dia and the undersized pellets are recycled back.I will not be able to give more than this information as you have to get in touch with technology suppliers for this process. The major technology supplier is Lurgi. In india we have three major pellets producers namely Kudremukh, Essar and Sesa Goa having plant in southern part and goa region. You can get in touch with any of these plant and see for yourself to get some Idea.

Drum pelletizers can also be used.

Contact sharadkittur@yahoo.co.in a metallurgist and with quite a bit of knowledge in iron ore pelletizing in India.

if it is an iron ore pelletising plant,

for natural magnetites 350MJ thermal energy/ton pellets,

for limonites 1500 MJ thermal energy/ton pellets

25-35 kWh/ton electric energy for mixing, balling and induration

0.05 m3 fresh water/ton pellet for cooling water circuits

mersintaner,

You seem to have good experience. Want to assist me in specifying pelletising of Limonites and Saprolites?

Mass balance doesnt work out unless thats one very heavy engineer!

how is nitrogen used in pellet making?

What is an interroceter?
