VR Room Aids Medical and Defense Design

05/30/2006 11:30 AM

Iowa State claims that a $4 million upgrade, funded by the Defense Department, has resulted in the world's highest-resolution virtual reality room. Boasting 100 million pixels, the "C6" room features 24 Sony digital projectors to handle 3D images from a Hewlett Packard computer with 96 parallel graphics processing units. Mechanical engineers and architects will use the room to develop 3D walkthroughs of proposed buildings. Other engineers are working with biologists to simulate and observe cell metabolism "from the inside." Researchers will also use the room to develop battlefield scenes.

VR Room

I thought about the 100 mega-pixel number a little. That's 12.5 current (8 mp)digital cameras or about half the number of projectors here. What are the design constraints that allow us to have much more high definition in our cameras vs. our projectors and TVs?
