Steam Autoclave Keeps Opening Pouches

03/05/2008 11:28 AM

We have a steam autoclave model # GE91415 AR-1. The process consists in 4 pre-Vacuums, sterilization period, then a deep post vacuum and two more post vacuums.

Many pouches are coming opened after from the autoclave cycle. Specially, those pouches that contain end caps.

Has someone similar issues with your autoclave?

Without knowing the specifics, 'end cap' makes me think closed container. The pressure within the 'pouch' will force it open during the vacuum steam cycle. I have had this happen with test vials when the cap is not vented. I'm no expert but have used our autoclave frequently for steri tests.

I agree with making sure that the pouches are vented.

If they are, then you may have a problem with the autoclave exhausting or vacuuming at too fast a rate. The rapid pressure drop will cause even a vented container to rupture.

you need to have a steam air & mixture in order to sterilize the pouches. The air overpressure will prevent the pouches from opening. This is standard when sterilizing this type of product.
