Hello Arsanbt,

Welcome to the forum.

We wish that you will contribute and learn from this forum.

Before we proceed to your question, here are few general tips to get the maximum out of this forum.

a) Please make your question as detailed as possible, more details you give the better answer you will get.

b) Avoid writing in CAPS as that is considered as shouting in this forum.

c) If any suggestion given by the member actually satisfies you, or does not solve your problem, keep that posted.

d) The members of this forum try their best to solve the problems and do have a very good command on the subject.

e) You will be surprised to see the amount of info, archives hold here..so do a search on here or at Mr Google, and in case you don't get anything you are welcome to post your query.

Now, can you give us more details on what transformer... you want to design...?

Cheers,

Hello arasanbt

A) First you need to know the Frequency the transformer will operate at, because there are different types:

1. Mains - 50Hz & 60Hz
2. Aircraft - 400Hz
3. Audio - 20 Hz through 20kHz
4. Radio Frequency: 20kHz to 100MHz
5. TV style - 100Nhz through 1,000MHz
6. And so on - Specify please

From here down, I have assumed you are enquiring about a Mains Frequency Power Transformer.

B) You need to know the Power Transfer requirements:

  1. Watts
  2. Kilowatts
  3. Megawatts
  4. And so on - Specify Please

C) You need to know the Duty Cycle of the transformer:

  1. 100% - Continuous full load
  2. Lesser amount, and duration - Specify please

D) You need to know Voltages and Currents:

  1. Primary
  2. Secondary
  • Specify Please

E) You need to know Vector requirements of transformer, if Mains frequency Power Transformer

  1. DY22
  2. DYN22
  3. DY11
  4. DYN11
  5. Other - Specify Please

F) You need to know Installation type:

  1. Indoor
  2. Outdoor
  3. Underground
  4. Other - Specify Please

G) You need to know Climate Conditions of proposed Site:

  1. Hot desert - Arizona, Sahara, or middle East
  2. Antarctica, Alaska
  3. Monsoon style - Bangladesh
  4. Normal - 5 degrees Celsius through 40 degrees Celsius
  5. Other - Specify please

H) You need to know Ground conditions, for Earthing requirements:

  1. Desert sand
  2. Rock
  3. gravel/shingle
  4. Clay
  5. Garden Soil
  6. Other - Specify please

J) You need to know Cooling requirements:

  1. Air Cooling - Forced Air - Can multifans be used - some sites cannot use fans, because of noise to neighbours
  2. Air Cooling - Natural convection
  3. Oil Cooling
  4. Water Cooling - If so then:
  • Fresh Water
  • seawater via heat exchanger system
  • Other - Specify please

K) You need to know Special Transport Conditions:

  1. Road seal strengths (Can the transformer be gotten to site safely)
  2. Transformer weight, size (refer above also)
  3. Clearances for transport, of the transformer - can it clear existing overhead services, wires, cables etc
  4. Other - Specify please

In reference to (K1) we had a memorable occasion when special transformers for a Power Station, arrived from overseas, and could not be unloaded at Lyttelton Port, because of size of the road tunnel or over the steep hill situation.

So the floating crane had to travel to Timaru, 100+ miles South, to unload the transformers. Many roads and bridges had to be strengthened to take the massive weight, even though they travelled one at a time, on a multiwheeled transporter.

It took several days for each transformer to arrive on site.

The Electrical Engineer, (not me, I hasten to add), who ordered the Transformers had not thought about the difficulties of unloading and transporting to site.

L) You need to know Special Installation Conditions:

  1. Vector Refer (E) above, same as existing transformers, if to be paralleled
  2. Clearance from buildings, structures
  3. Connections to/from Supply/Load
  4. Tapchanger required
  5. Protection + Control Relay panel/s needed
  6. Type of cables/connections for Primary
  7. Type of cables/connections for Secondary
  8. Estimated Fault Currents:
  • Primary
  • Secondary

There are other requirements, but those are the basics, and allow a starting point for you.

Hope that assists you.

Kind Regards....

Hello V.I.Abraham

I did not used to have much of that.

However, over the years I have changed.

Meanwhile, I trust I shall not have to repeat that same reply, in a few weeks, to a "Guest" who asks the same question.

Dinnertime for me, right now, Cheers.

Kind Regards....

I agree,

Great post, but i would not have been so patient and kind, especially after the lame answer of "I'm a design engineer" to the original request asking what he was trying to accomplish.

Bravo for the effort, clarity and civility.

You carefully match the requirements of the application to the specifications of the transformer.
