The Philosopher and the Golf Shot

03/08/2008 5:42 AM

éOne in a very occasional series about the musings of Réne Descartes and his pal Jimmy, they are playing golf.

So, Réne is a yard (or maybe a metre...well, he thinks it's a metre therefore...) off the Green on the tightly mown fringe.
He approaches the ball thinking.
' Shall I flop ze ball up into the air to the flag? Or mais-be I should putt her to ze 'ole n'est ce pas?'
(Jimmy is 1 up with 3 to play and they are keen to get back to the club house to watch Pompey beat Man' United in the FA Cup )

What does Réne decide and why?

Del

So, Jimmy says "Try a 6 iron and just tap it." and Rene says "I think not!" and POOF, he disappears.

It doesn't really matter since the storm clouds and lightning will obviously drive him to the 19th hole and get a head start warming up at the fireside and getting a good seat to watch the game.

The question should have how far the cup is from the fringe.

If I were playing this shot and the cup was 20 to 30 feet from the fringe I would use the chip. Ife the grass was wet I would use the flop.

If the cup was in the 20-30 foot range and dry the chip would be fine.

I the cup was under 10 feet from the fringe and dry I would putt.

If the cup were under 10 and wet I would use a chip.

just depends on your lay of the green

Well Réne has been around Jimmy now for some time, and he's not going to be hassled, and he reckons if he can upset Jimmy he can get the edge. So he asks jimmy's advice and would you believe it, he does not agree. This leads to a bet that he can hole it one from where he is? Jimmy takes him on and with his trusty putter Réne down it in one. Jimmy now has to buy the round back at the club house, there is a morel to this some where, but cant think what it is.

Regards JD.

Ah yes the putter is the answer because Rene thinks the ball cannot fall into the hole whereas while it is rolling on the ground it always has a chance as long as it isn't short of the hole.

Réne has noticed that short putts never drop

Perhaps someone got something caught in their throat when they were about to name it? But perhaps from one of these I think the first is the original theory.

My dictionary says 'golf' comes from the Dutch 'kulf', meaning 'club'. It also says that 'club' come from the Swedish 'kluba', meaning 'clump'. Then it says that 'clump' comes from the Danish 'klump', meaning 'lump'. Then it.....Oh,sod it. It's just taken from a type of German car, OK.

Golf was chosen as the terms "sh*t!" and "d*mn it!" were already taken. Although they are heard, and even worse, on the course even today.

Well, if there is indeed a morel in there somewhere, there is certainly a "fungus among us."

On the other hand, if there is a moral in there, it would likely be, "Don't bet on golf shots with philosophers." They are notoriously cagey and short of cash. A dangerous combination.

Hi bp01

I suppose it is a answer that can grow on you? It was an off the cuff remark, but if I was to have a go at what that moral may be, I would say, as someone who has only broken 100 once.

Think positive, keep trying, and you never know you may get lucky and brake the 100?
