Motor starting problem

03/11/2008 9:29 AM

I am working on a new washing machine made for 120V 60Hz. We uses 60 Hz in the caribbean. Will that affect the starting and what can be done?

It will work, a bit slower then designed, but watch the motor temp, it might get a bit warm.

Labyguy's got the important part (motor temperature). You should also check the temperature of the water solenoid valves (energized while water is flowing), and the solenoid which shifts the transmission from agitate to spin (usually energized for spin).

Other effects which may be somewhat annoying, but will not damage the machine:

- Most washers use a cycle timer with a small universal motor. At 50 hz, it will take 16% longer to wash each load of laundry. If your machine uses a solid state timer, the timing will not change.

- The spin/agitator motor will also run 16% slow. On the wash cycle, your clothes may not get as clean, and the spin cycle may not remove quite as much water as it would with 60hz. Both of these may be compensated by the longer run time.

It must be quite easy (if a little pricey) to buy a 220 volt 50 Hz machine (UK production for example) and if your local voltage is only 120 volts, then place a suitably dimensioned transformer (there are some modern electronic devices that may be are cheaper to do the same) between the supply and the machine...

Maybe a manufacturer will replace the motor with the correct one for you?

Maybe you can get the motor rewound locally for the different voltage.

If its a US model (120volts 60Hz), and NOT a direct drive, change pulley and belt to suit, but watch out for overheating!!! Unless it (the motor) is dimensioned 50/60 Hz of course!!

hi,

i m ram.As you already said that you use 60Hz machine &60Hz in caribbean, there seems to be no problem.because, that machine is manufactured based on 60Hz frequency supply.so,there will be no effect on it.

Hi! Ram,

See reply #2, it was typo in the original post It is 50Hz in Carribean.

Speed is proportional to Hz and hence the motor will run slower.

Cheers.
