Yes, ME too! I HAVE idea I am sure would work, just I have no money to set aside time to do it.......
If You want good and correct translation, then it is not simple at all, and to make word for word translation may not be easy or entirely correct, because some words have meaning depending on context, and there can be synonimes that also would fit better or worse depending on context.
For correct translation, among other things, program would have to have some >>common knowledge<< built in, and that put it in class of AI programs, Knowledge Databases or Expert Systems..... Best would be if program could >>understand<< sentence before translating it, but even to compose translated sentence properly, it would have to >>know<< gramatics of target language as well........
So, if You intended to make good program, if You have no knowledge about AI programming, better prepare yourself to long learning and lot of logic planing before You would be able to start actually program it :-))
Above all, dont just sit and start showeling code on one pile, thinking You can mend it later if it would not work.......
It would also help if You learn something about languages in generall, as different languages sometimes dont have indenticall word forms, or all genders or miss some time orientation, or they have >>iregular werbs<< like English, or language is full of idioms that mean something else then literall translation would reveal, like in German language.
Lot of people is working on problem, and there are some results in form of programs, too..... Therefore, take a look, maybe somebody has done what You intend to do, so You would just waste Your time if You are not sure You can do it better by far!
Regards from Zagreb, the capitol of Croatia, Europe!
dear Henrik14 thanks alot for your concern. i am a computer engineering graduating class student and i want this title to be my final year project and i know i will face a lots of problem as you mention above but what makes a project a project is difficulties that you are facing .i will try my best to acheive my goals and what i want to inform you is that there are a lots of widly applicable language transaltor already designed for some international language but i want to make my project domestic so if it is possible for some why not for us so i want you to proceed in making your ideas real . please lets keep in touch
Honored sir, it all depends on goals You set, i.e. what level of translation it would be. Simplest system is >>word for word<< translation, and some add interactivity where there could be multiple choice of synonyms...... Other way is to make Neural Network program that would be able to learn translation on examples, but for this one has to have hundreds of texts, each translated >>sentence for sentence<<, and more perfect translation would be, better results would be from such program. If You add some gramatic analyse of both sentences, then program could recognize properly how gramatic rules apply also, and whole network of Neurons would be that much smaller. But it ask for aditional networks and word analyse in gramatic and functionall way, and each word must be input in all applicable forms, with word root extracted and so on, and for that at least one must know gramatic of both source and target languages.........
But even in translation >>Word for Word<< one may need good Neurall Network for word recognition, specially if there are many similar words with different meaning, that differ in just few letters........ Then, pecularities of language can preclude proper translation, as in Finnish language to say "thank you", one say "tak", "thank you nicely" is "tak tak" while "thank You very very much" is "tak tak tak"... In Croatian You can say "Gore gore gore" which literaly means "Hills", "up", "burning" or "up there hills are burning"..... Word "gore" could also mean "worse", and if one make sentence with this word repeated four times, it would be difficult even for a native to understand what is supposed meaning of each particular "gore" and there could be severall corect sentences with slightly different meaning.... Fortunately there are not many such hurdles, at least not in Croatian language, but those are exceptions and so can be "pretranslated", which means such word combinations have to be recognized as separate case and translation should be >>hardwired<< into program or wocabulary, and still if You have example like one with four "gore" words, then You have to offer ALL combinations of possible meaning for person working on translation if program work interactively.
So, for Your project, best option is to do >>word for word<< translation, and if languages involved has such words as "gore" in Croatian language, that could be translated only from context of sentence, then You must make program to interact with human who should then check which of offered meanings is applicable....
Me, whenever I do something like this, I take care to make it as universal as possible so it would be translation program that could translate any language to any other, and with simple addition of another language grammar and wocabulary, this language would be translatable back and forth with any of previously used languages...... So it would start with one pair of languages that could be translated both ways and when third language would be added there would be 6 translation possible, with addition of 4th language 12 translations would be possible and so on....... With good planning, adding of new language would not be more difficult like seting up translation of first pair of languages, as there would be >>cookbook<< with procedures and program could help interactively asking elements for each new word, for its gramatic clasification, and one inputing words could be asked to extract root of word and write it in all its forms possible.
But I am old and retired for health reasons, so I barely survive as it is, therefore I shall do it when I would need not worry if I would have enought money to both eat and pay the bills.........
You are still young and unless You take job at once after geting diploma, you would have time to do it, and I could help by explaining my ideas and making parts of this program, but for bigger part of work, one for inputing words and grammar of each language, we would have to have help of qualified linguists or translators, and that cost lot of money in first place, and such people are difficult to find that would want to do it because usually they realize that their services would not be necesary once such program is made...........
