Interface or Tool to Draw Flow Chart from DCS? How Can it be Done ?

03/12/2008 4:34 AM

I am new & nothing about automation programming.I have given a task to do the following. But i dont understand the real time application process or system.I am not getting a clear picture to do this.

I need a tool or interface to draw a flowchart getting data/readings from DCS(of 5 instruments)/or any other controller of a real time application. For every 5-10 secs the flow chart shud be drawn getting readings/data from dcs(say 5 instrument readings/data

How this can be done in programming (windows environment) ?

Pls explain me in detail about this.Is there someone interested to assist or guide me on this till i complete ?

Am i posted in right forum if not where to post it ?

reply

regards

Apply for specific task training on the DCS package in question. Is there a Mentor nearby that could help?

Guest, are you the same Guest that posted the original post or a different one? I'm confused.

Do you really want to draw a 'flowchart' or do you simply want to trend the real-time data from the DCS?

There are dozens of software applications, HMIs, trending packages etc that do that. You didn't say what DCS you are using, where the trend data is needed, or why you are doing this, so it's pretty much impossible to give you any real answer.

OPC is a standard protocol that is commonly used to communicate between DCS systems and trending applications. There are OPC servers available for every major DCS on the market, and there are dozens of OPC enabled trending packages.

This link will give you the basics on OPC, and if nothing else will give you an overview of some of the applications used in automation programming.

Point taken.

DCS: Distributed Control System - decentralised control centres which have some degree of autonomy, but are still integrated into a whole system

HMI: Human Machine Interface - specialized electronic operator interfaces

OPC: OLE for Process Control. - connectivity standard - www.opcfoundation.org

Thanks Eric, My comment was really aimed at the OP (Original Poster). Your post made a lot of sense, even without the acronyms expanded, and, I think it's reasonable to assume, because you are familiar with the subject, that you correctly understood the question. Lots of us learn about subjects we know nothing about by reading the questions and answers, and, some of the clever guys will often pick up on part of the problem which they can add value to. If the question is impossible to understand for anyone outside the field, the questioner immediately loses half his potential audience.

Dear LPT.

have you got a solution for your problem.

if not it would take a little more correspondence before any one could suggest you correctly. some body rightly suggested about getting in touch with your mentor.

Any way, for further proceedings, firstly we need to understand what DCS make model are you talking of.

Do you have the details of instruments connected to DCS, for which you need to collect data?

what is it that you need to do with that collected data?
