IEC 61850

03/18/2008 12:46 AM

What does the Protocol IEC 61850 exactly do? what is it purpose? should I use it instead of DNP3, MODBUS, IEC 101, etc.?

It is a TCP/IP protocol, which is more flexible than the other protocol. In Modbus you have to assign everything to specific address, but not this one. Every IED (Intelligent Electrical Device) should have .CID file (Configured ID). This .CID file contains all the capabilities of the IED and from there we can choose which signal will be used for communication between IED (for example: interlocking and blocking) regardless the manufacturer.

Adhyartha, thanks for your answer, well I do understand what you are telling me, I've read about interlocking and blocking, the .CID file, well I didn't know that I've gone over the relay manual and have almost any information abouth that file. When I try to find the capabilities the manual makes reference to the IEC 61850 documents, in my company we are thinking of buying such documents, but I'm not sure if they are what I need.

Yup, the IEC 61850 makes the IEC and ANSI speak in the same language. For example in ANSI you can find 50 for over current and I>> in IEC, but in IEC 61850 they call it PTOC (Protection Time Over Current), and this info can be found in .CID file

The main purpose is to define a communications infrastructure that will allow seamless integration of the IEDs - an infrastructure that is vendor independent and will allow devices from multiple vendors to be integrated together. You can still use other protocols via protocol converter.
