Do I Need Anti-Static Brush for Conformal Coating on PCB?

03/19/2008 4:12 AM

Is anyone know whether I need anti-static brush if I want to apply conformal coating (Acrylic Protective Lacquer) onto a PCB manually? Any other consideration is required in order to protect the PCB from static charge damage.

Yes, without a doubt. There are several manufacturers of anti-static brushes suitable for your purpose. Here is one: http://www.gordonbrush.com/index.htm . To find more, just Google "anti-static brushes".

Also,

Make sure that the pcb is extra clean (no residual fluxes, fingerprints, etc) or you might end up with coating de-lamination. Talk with your flux/solder supplier for the proper cleaning agent. IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol) works on some of the fluxes but not all.

Rick,

Thank you for the advice. Do you know whether we can use normal brush for the manual coating. As I worried about ESD damaging the PCB during manual coating.

Regards,

BM

You do need the anti static brushes. There are plenty of suppliers and these are very inexpensive. Do not risk damaging your boards by using 'normal' (espcially plastic) brushes.
