If you have never done it before, save yourself a lot of grief. Contact the manufacturer of the valve you are now using, and tell them your requirement, and they will send you a data sheet. First rule of being an Engineer use the KISS method:

Most of the manufacturers that I have visited have available amny charts which give the flow charicteristics of the various valve sizes & types.

What valves are you concerned with? What are their applications?

A universal way in which to compare valve capacity is through Cv (or Kv if you're not in the USA).

First you'll need to calculate your required Cv.

There are several things that need to be taken into consideration when sizing a control valve:

1. specific gravity of fluid

2. viscosity of fluid

3. fluid temperature

4. fluid flow rate (GPM, lb/hr, l/min, etc)

5. Type of service: on/off, flow control, pressure reducing, temperature control

6. Inlet pressure of the fluid

7. Maximum pressure drop accross the valve when fully open.

8. Valve action: fail open, fail closed, fail in place

9. Do you need flow over the seat or under the seat?

10. Do you need a valve that has a linear, equal %, quick opening (etc) flow characteristic?

11. Control signal (Electric: 4-20mA, 0-10 vDC; Pneumatic: 3-15 psig; Digital: HART, Fieldbus, Profibus, Modbus, etc)

12. Actuator type

13. Is position feedback needed?

14. Does the valve & associated accessories need to be Intrinsically Safe (Class 1, Div 2)?

Some great resources that go over control principle are:

http://www.spiraxsarco.com/resources/steam-engineering-tutorials/basic-control-theory/basic-control-theory.asp

http://www.spiraxsarco.com/resources/steam-engineering-tutorials/basic-control-theory/choice-and-selection-of-controls.asp

I hope the above helps point you in the right direction.

If you can share more specific information on your application I am glad to provide you with specific information.

Refer to ISA hand books for data sheets; you have blank forms there. Any good library should have these books. You can also order them if you want them for your personal copy.

Re: Valve Datasheet Preparation

First of all, What type valve we are talkng about? Control valve, automatic emergency shutdown valve or mechanical (manual) isolation valve?.

For mechanical valves... Sorry, no can help.

For control valve, refer to ISA-tr20.00.01-2001 Specification forms for process measurement and control, in order to obtaina a typical control valve data sheet and instructions for filling it out. Also, you may find free spec sheets from several places in the Internet. Google "control valve data sheet".

For general technical information about control valves, try the Fisher control valve handbook, which you can get free from the Emerson Process web page.

For automatic emergency shutdouwn valves, also refer to ISA.

Concerning control valves, the data sheet needs to be filled with two types of info:

First, the process data: MIN/NOR/MAX flow, pressure, temperature, MAX shutoff delta-P, fluid composition, corrosion problems, noise limitations, etc. This allows the valve manufacturer to calculate a valve capacity and pick a specific valve body design and valve actuator size for you.

Secondly, the instrument design data (project or site specific): Valve has to be on-off or regulating, pneumatic, or electro-pneumatic, with or without positioner, field bus signal or 4-20 mA HART, FAIL TO CLOSE or FAIL TO OPEN, etc.

With this info, valve manufacturer can produce for you two documents: the Calculation Sheet and the MFR Valve Data Sheet, with all kinds of specific technical details of the valve.

For automatic emergency shutdown valves, it is a whole different story. Here, other issues are important: Ball or butterfly shutdown valve (site specific). Proper actuator sizing to be able to close and open the valve against process forces in the required time. If ball valve, what type of ball and body: full bore or reduced bore, split body or solid body. If butterfly: 90 degrees or 60 degrees. Needs single or dual solenoids? Requires automatic partial closure testing capabilities? Requires position feedback (limit switches)? Actuator must be hydraulic, pneumatic or electric (site specific)? Etc., etc.

A whole different game. I do not know of a specific handbook for reference. All I can think of is ISA S84.01, at least to clarify the safety issues.
