Ventilation Design

03/31/2008 12:46 AM

Dear HVAC Engineers,

How to determine the size of wall opening (window) on a building (such as small compressor-house) that doesn't utilize any exhaust fan, for the purpose of ventilation?

Thank's

Hello, some info I ones found

Engine room ventilation can be estimated by the following formulas,

assuming 100°F (38°C) ambient air temperature:

V (cfm) = ( H / 0.070 x 0.24 x T ) + Engine Combustion Air

V (m3/min) =( H + 1.099 x 0.017 x T ) + Engine Combustion Air

V = Ventilation air (cfm) (m3/min).

H = Heat radiation (Btu/min) (kW).

T = Permissible temperature rise in engine room (°F) (°C).

Density of air at 100°F = 0.070 lb/cu ft (1.099 kg/m3).

Specific heat of air = 0.24 Btu/°F (0.017 kW/°C).

As per IMC 2003 Section 402 Natural Ventilation

The minimum openable area to the outdoors shall be 4% of the floor area being ventilated.

I don't know about other codes or ASHRAE says about this.

Hi all I also want to know about this. Its really very important post for me. The first step in studying for the HVAC & Refrigeration afternoon module of the mechanical PE exam is to obtain the appropriate references. Thanks
