can anybody explain about the design of stepped shaft and formulas by using bending moment diagram?.or pls tell me the website address having all the detail of shaft design.
thankyou for your guidance .i go through the website that what you were given but formulas are very tough to understand.is any simple software available that give all the detail of the shaft with the input of Power,RPM,Span, material? please guide me.
Large, high speed shaft design is complex and tough. I wouldn't expect to do one in an hour or so.
Do you have a Mechanical Engineer with machine design experience on your project? If so, he or she should take the lead role in the design.
But, if you want a fairly basic explanation of shafts, I'd start with Shigley and Mischke's Standard Handbook of Machine Design. Do you have a copy available?

I havnt the copy of this book.i am in india.from today i start my search for this book.is this book elabrate the step by step procedure for designing a shaft? plz inform me.
No, it won't give you step-by-step. It will provide the background you need. The website I gave you seems to provide step-by-step, but you had difficulty following the formulas. I don't think you can do stepped shaft design in a cookbook fashion.
Can you give some details about your project and your background? That might help guide you a little.

I am presently working in a industrial fan manufaturing (batli boi ltd) company,as retrofit engineer of fans.in our company we have one fan design soft ware in that soft ware, if we giving the pressure, volume and temp, other details are, i mean rotor dimension shaft dia every thing comes. Now am engaged on to retrofit one boiler ID fan.In that what my problem is the existing span between bearing is 3.6 m whereas the max dia is 290 mm(at centre) min dia is 160 mm(at bearings).NOW in order to increasing pressure we decided to increase the rotor dia by 5% .and static load, dynamic load are increased by 10% .while i go through the software the shaft dia comes around 460 mm for retrofit .while for the existing (actual) the shaft dia 340 mm comes. but in 290 mm that fan was working satisfactarily in past 5 years.so iam thinking to reduce the shaft size from 460 hence i needed the procedure for calculating shaft diameter which is widely used.your comments on this is highly appriciated.
I think I misunderstood your question. I think you're saying you already have a cookbook solution software program, but you don't like the answer it gives you. Can you talk to the person who wrote that software?

sir actually that shaft ware is ventioldea software ,a big fan manufacturer in west germany.the softwre is generated in late 80s. now it is difficult to find the person who wrote this software.further our company has not continue the collabration with ventioldea.
