low impedence dry couplants for ultrasonic application

My company has been looking for a dry couplant for use with ultrasonic transducers. So far we have tested couplants used in other products as well as Aqualene elastomer couplant. So far, these couplants have not met our performance expectations.

Are there any dry couplants that dont create a considerable drop in signal strength? If so, what are they?

I've been using a plastic called TPX (http://www.boedeker.com/tpx_p.htm) but I do use a little liquid (silicon oil) between the transducer matching layer and the TPX. Is Aqualene biocompatible?

After a bit of research I found this hydrophilic couplant http://www.nexus-bg.com/hcouplant.html

After some more research I found an article that compared various couplants such as PMMA and Aqulene with a hydrophilic couplant. http://www.ndt.net/article/ecndt2006/doc/We.1.6.5.pdf

After reading through the article, I am under the impression that a hydrophilic couplant would be the ideal dry couplant. Does anyone else agree?
