GPS in the dairy aisle

05/04/2005 8:27 AM

Sad but true, they are putting GPS receivers and flat screens onto shopping carts so that people can find what they are looking for in grocery stores. Not only that but you are supposed to be able to scan things as you put them in the cart to have a running tally of what you bought...
Now if they can just make a better bottle return machine....

Not sad at all

If you go into the grocery knowing you have $30 to spend, you can make sure that you stay under that level. Plus, I always seem to get into the line with the person who is using the register to do this, making my wait longer. I think this is a very good idea.

Excellent!

Invariably, when I shop for someone else, I wind up spending an inordinate amount of time looking for some obscure item that would otherwise never find it's way into my shopping cart. Usually, the kid who answers my "Where can I find?" question has either worked at the supermarket for all of two weeks or thinks that baking soda is a new form of Pepsi. A GPS locator would be nice.

Grocery Store RFID

Has anyone heard updates on RFID in the supermarket? At my last read, pushing a cart through a gateway at the checkout without unloading was just around the corner...

It is just around the corner, this is the year that Wal-Mart is demanding that all their suppliers must RFID tag all their products. After that it's just installing readers.
