Double bearing means that the alternator has a bearing on both ends. Single bearing alternators only have a bearing at the rear, and are bolted directly onto the engine. Therefor they don't need a front bearing. The drive shaft of the engine is a taper, and the alternator drive shaft has a tapered socket that mates with the engine shaft.
