Yagi Antenna Design

04/04/2008 2:03 PM

I'm looking for an html or down-loadable program which will assist me in designing a yagi antenna intended for: (1) either 915MHz or 2.4GHz, (2)printed-circuit fabrication. The metrics I need are all of the physical dimensions (element size and spacing, element width on circuit board), bandwidth, gain, front/back ratio, and driving impedance. I realize this is quite a laundry list of capabilities so I'm willing to settle for the next best thing and/or pay. The downloadable program must run on Windows XP. Anybody have or can recommend a resource for practical design techniques for designing a printed-circuit Yagi at these bands? Most are directed to the HAM bands.

I just did a search, and here is what I came up with

This is just a general yagi calculator that you have to download, http://vk5dj.mountgambier.org/Yagi/Yagi.html

This is also a yagi calculator but is an html type, but is also not specific to pcb. http://www.csgnetwork.com/antennae3ycalc.html

This one is a pdf link to someone else's pcb yagi at 2.4 ghz, you will have to get the measurements from the pictures, but should be easy enough. https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/blobs/retrieve.cgi?attachment_id=226894&native_or_pdf=pdf

For no reason at all, I decided to take some measurements from the 2.4ghz Yagi picture in the pdf. The elements are about 3 cm wide, the driven element is 4.75cm long with a 1cm space, the reflector is 5.6cm long and is 1.7cm on center behind the driven element. The directors are spaced 2cm, 2.55cm and 2.75cm on center, and are 4.7cm 4.8cm and 4.35cm in length respectively.

I doubt these are exact measurements, and since this is someone else's design, I don't know if they have some sort of patent, although I am sure you could make some changes. At the very least you can compare the numbers to what the software gives you.

The correct name is Yagi-Uda antenna and Google and Dogpile searches will turn up all kinds of applicable information.
