Are you referring to geothermal engery? Or compressed air storage?

Have you tried to google the subject? What exactly are you looking for?

I've been to Iceland, and seen the usage of geothermal energy just about everywhere. It is very low tech. Small farms along the coast, they just drill a well about 50ft down, and get all the hot water they will ever need. Right outside of Reykjavík, there is a huge geothermal power plant. Ther is nothing special about the technology, other than copious amounts of boiling water. You should go there yourself. Iceland is one of the most beautiful places in the world, and it's really not that far away.

I think for most of the rest of the world you would have to drill down very deep, making it economically unfeasible. So I guess living atop active volcano's has it's advantages, most of the time.

However, Mount Hekla, an active volcano, does erupt on a regular basis. Icelanders have learned to live with it.

your geo-thermal Earth Coupled Loop (ECL)

You might be interested in 'ground source heat-pumps'. It's not geothermal, which you seem to be looking for, but relates to your initial question. One of the problems with the technology is probably how long the hardware lasts (It's comparable to a fridge, and they're not renowned for longevity). At one time air-source heat pumps were gaining interest in the UK, but that seems to have switched to ground-source, either in a trench or bore-hole. Here is one related company link. The UK has limited scope for practicable geothermal energy, but here is one case reference.
