Jam nut preload

04/07/2008 4:13 PM

Generally, you preload a bolted connection to keep the surfaces from separating.

With a jam nut THIS NUT IS INTENDED FOR USE FOR POSITIVE LOCKING OF ROD END TERMINALS TO HYDRAULIC PISTON RODS, TIE ROD ENDS, PUSH-PULL RODS, ETC

So, if you have a bolt directly tapped into metal (tapped threads), and use a jam nut (with a locking feature) to keep the bolt locked in there, could a tension load higher than the jam nut preload separate the connection? I would think no, and it would require a torque load to "unspin" the connection.

thoughts?

I dunno. If I were worried about the threads backing out I would use LocTite (or similar thread locker). The stuff works. When you need to get it out, heat the joint up with a torch. It will back right out.
