VSD (Variable Speed Drive) for overhead crane

04/08/2008 9:00 AM

Hey all. I've been tasked with investigating the possibility of replacing some smooth start drives with VSD's that we are currently using on 2 of our overhead cranes. These would control the bridge and trolley motors. I'm especially interested in finding something that allows "Plugging". The bridge uses two 1-1/2hp, 2-speed motors, one per side. The trolley uses one 1hp, 2-speed motor. All 3 use a motor mounted brake that's used as a parking brake, "set" after the trolley or bridge comes to a standstill.

I would like the VSD to have 2 or 3 speed capability, run on 480vac, and run single winding motors, (2 for the bridge) and have plugging capabilty. One drive for the bridge, one drive for the trolley.

I have searched the net but can't find anything. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Oh, I'd move real slow on that project. Overhead cranes are a real source of liability for an engineer. Before I messed with it at all, I'd call the crane manufacturer and have them do the up-grade. If they don't offer it as a standard option, there is a reason.

We have been providing VFD of Siemens/Telemechanque and other makes on our cranes in India. They are reliable and have been working satisfactorily since years. VFD has eleminated Creep Speed gear box and motor etc. You should approach local mfrs. of VFD they can sort out your problem.

Was there a specific drive you utilized? I was looking at the Telemechanique Altivar 31. I'm trying to narrow down what is used successfully in the industry before contacting any specific suppliers. I'm especially interested in the capability of the unit to "plug" the load, or otherwise allow the operator to be going in one direction and select the opposite direction in slowing/stopping/positioning the load.

It should also be simple setup, programmable from a drive integrated display terminal. This is a very simple operation; North/South 2-speed or East/West 2-speed.

Thanks

There are quite a few options available for this. Replace your search for VFD (Variable frequency drive). These are great for overhead crane applications. These allow better control over speed, starts and stops.

A couple of companies are: Electromotive and Power Electronics. If you have any other crane related questions please feel free to give me a call.

Thanks Melissa, I think I have found exactly what I need with the Power Electronics. We currently use their SmoothMove product but I was unaware of their MicroSpeed CX and SmartMove drives. Looks like those units cover all the bases and more. Thanks for everyone's help.

There is one more solution for long travel drive. You can install a Fluid Coupling between motor and gearbox. It give trouble free long term solution but no speed variation, we have used them in many cranes and are very much satisfied.
