Volumetric Efficiency of Air Compressor

04/10/2008 5:46 AM

how will you find the volumetric efficiency of a reciprocating 4 cylinder double acting double stage air compressor without using any flow measurig apparatus? also how the efficiency can be improoved?

Have you any data sheet of this compressor, any technical specification? Any trade name of it? What manufacturer?

If you could take some dimensions of compressor cilinders, RPM of driver, etc, give me a valid e-mail address to send you a noncomplicated software to get a appropiate information about compressor performance.

Hope this help

Dear Aurel,

Could you please send me the software you're talking about

I'm working upon a project currently to increase the sealing efficiency of reciprocating air compressors.

Thank you very much. You'd be great help. :)

If you know the displacement cubic inches and number of the compression cylinders, the RPM of the motor and how many compression cycles of each cylinder per minute, then you can calculate the volumn output for a given time frame.

Make sure the isn't any leakage of cylinder rings don't leak pressure into the crank case and/or piping leakage between the compressor and storage vessel.

This is the compressor efficiency formula we use on compressors pushing gas to cylinders and flasks of known volume.

1. COMPRESSOR OUTPUT=

V(P2 x P1) / (PA x T)

Where:

P1 = Initial pressure in test flask (psig)

P2 = Final pressure in test flask (psig)

PA = Atmospheric pressure. Use the value of 14.7 psia if at sea level

V = Volume of test flask (cubic feet)

T = Time required to pump up test flask for P1 to P2 (minutes)

2. Use the compressor output calculated in step 1 to calculate the compressor efficiency

3. EFFICIENCY= COMPRESSOR OUTPUT X100 / COMPRESSOR RATING

V(P2 - P1) / (PA x T)

NOT

V(P2 x P1) / (PA x T) IF YOU USE THIS FORMULA AND P2=0(AND IT OFTEN IS) THEN THE ANSWER IS ALWAYS ZERO REGARDLESS OF THE REST OF THE VARIABLES
