Technician

I am trying to determine if standard power cords for displays, UPS, computers etc.. are allowed in a plenum? I have read the NEC and I am a little confused regarding standard factory made power cords. I have an area under a raised deck that is used for ventillation in the space. I have outlets in the plenum area that are ran using either metal jacket MC cable or sealtight. I have 3 inch holes in the raised deck that I run the power cords through to plug into the outlet. Is this an acceptible approach or is it a code violation?

The question comes down to one about the combustion byproducts of the cable insulation.

Hello Viking Bob

You will need to advise your location (Alter in your Profile), to get any accurate answer.

The reason is that Regulations vary in jurisdictions.

Kind Regards....

Just about all jurisdictions require that cables run in a plenum be specifically plenum rated. Plenum rated cables are marked as such. See NEC articles 300.22 and 645, particularly 645.5 (D) for more information on information technology situations. Std factory power cords are not normally plenum rated.
